LAGOS NUT TO REMAIN ON STRIKE TILL 2010

THERE are indications that the strike embarked upon by the Lagos State wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) may continue till 2010, as the state government has refused to dialogue with the teachers.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Dr. Elijah Adewale, told the Nigerian Tribune at a two-day stakeholders’ consultative forum on tertiary education, on Tuesday, that the government would not do anything on the agitation of the teachers until the 2010 budget was passed.

“There is nothing the state government can do now about the strike. The teachers will have to wait until the 2010 budget is passed,” he said.

Reiterating the commitment of the government to improve the quality of education in the state, Elijah said the state government had employed about 1,557 teachers to fill vacant positions in the primary and secondary schools as the pupils resumed for the new academic session.

According to him, the state government had perfected the necessary arrangement that would make teaching more effective as well as provide an enabling environment for members of staff during the new academic year.

Elijah said adequate preparations had been put in place to provide furniture and books for pupils as they resumed for studies.

Responding to the strike embarked upon by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Elijah said the government was on top of the situation, calling on the union to reconsider its position in the ongoing crisis in the interest of the people.
